James Madison Dollar Coins






The obverse, or front side of his coin features an image of James Madison, the fourth President of the United States of America. The words on the coin includes Madison's name, the phrase "4th President" and includes the years which Madison served in the office, from 1809 - 1817. Madison's predecessor was Thomas Jefferson of the state of Virginia; he was succeeded by James Monroe, also of Virginia.









The reverse (back) side of the Madison Presidential Dollars will have a picture of the Statue of Liberty and the words, "United States of America," and the denomination of "$1." This coin will be made of the same metal, in terms of composition and weight as the Sacagawea Dollar coin is currently struck. The Sacagawea Dollar will continue to be made during the course of the Presidential Dollar Program.







The coins in this series are the first American coins made since the year 1933 to have lettering along the edge of the coin (edge lettering). The new dollar will include the words "In God We Trust," "E Pluribus Unum" and the date of production (2007) on the rim of this coin.
